"Affording Architecture", the big title to catch people's eyes. "Affording Architecture at Mall Grand Indonesia". Now how does that sound to you? Quoting this article
here,
The theme Affording Architecture, I think this event will attract people. Affording Architecture roughly means "architecture affordable". Affordable by whom? By the people of Indonesia, starting from the lower classes to the top, both from private and government circles.
Theme of "architecture affordable" said Sukendro SP, JAT 2009 the committee chairman, is set because I wanted to socialize the architecture to the whole society. This exhibition also as a means to educate the public that the architecture is important. Important for what? In a very broad scope, architecture is important to improve the welfare of society.
Seriously man? Affordable Architecture? At the most glamorous mall in the country? You gottta be kidding me.
Comparing to the beautiful and delicate exhibition held regularly by axioo photography at the same place, it totally seems to me that this celebrated Young Indonesian Architects (AMI) group's exhibition is merely to promote themself and trying to get more high end clients.
It always sounds pathetic to me when such events were being held at the malls. People keep building malls and create this hypereality inside because the real city out there is going more and more chaotic. What happened to museums? Art centers? It is YOUR job, dear architects, to educate people how a city should run! Hold a car lottery! Lucky draw! Do whatever things to make people go to the more educated places than malls! What is wrong with this society?
Last week I went to a German photography exhibition held at Bentara Budaya Jakarta, and tell you what, it was nice! The place are meant to be an exhibition hall. But, you know what, there is no one there but me and my friend. Pathetic.
Everytime this JAT things crossed my mind, I was so troubled and filled with rage. You should say "CONSUMING Architecture". That would suits you perfect.
Do you actually think people would pay 1.000.000 rupiah of money for those so-called international lectures? I bet those who came were the wealthy and stylish architects and some students who come from a rich family.
Sorry, this is the longest and most boring post of mine. And you may call me a cynic.
ps. I adore Prof. Aldo Franchini from
Politecnico di Milano, who recently gave his lecture here, for his modesty. I wish more people like him were here in this country. Not those crappy people who try to turn my architectural school into a horrible experimental shitty thing.
ps2. I don't even bother giving links to the event or posting any picture here.
ps3. I don't know, I think I'm holding myself back from this kind of architecture thing. I can relate to my friend's post
here. I don't hate architecture, for it is part of my life.
